North cruises to tennis win With only two Southern Oregon Conference matches remaining, the North Medford boys tennis team did its part in keeping even with Ashland. The Black Tornado, in a first-place deadlock with the Grizzlies at the top of the SOC, cruised to an 8-1 home win over Grants Pass on Saturday. North swept all five singles matches before dropping the No. 1 doubles contest. Jeremy Leever got things rolling for the Black Tornado with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory over Levi Brown. Teammate Marco Martin cleaned things up with a dominating, 6-0, 6-1 win over Bart Zottola. At 6-1, North remains tied with Ashland after both teams tagged the lone league loss on each other. "The guys are coming around well and really playing," said North Medford coach Chad Empee. "We're just trying to get the next two matches in and then get ready for districts." ASHLAND 5, SOUTH EUGENE 4 - At Eugene, Ashland's No. 1 doubles team of Ari Zaslow and Lance Streng scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the team of Joseph Dunham and Cab McBean to help the Grizzlies earn a non-conference win. Girls Tennis NORTH MEDFORD 6, GRANTS PASS 3 - At Grants Pass, North Medford capitalized on its strength in doubles to post its 39th consecutive dual-meet victory. North Medford's top two doubles teams of Annie Chaney and Shannon Leever and Rebekah Murphy and Andrea Pratt each coasted to 6-1 and 6-0 victories. The Black Tornado won three of four doubles matches. North Medford, which has not had all its starters in the lineup this season, will be at full strength for a home SOC dual against Klamath Union Tuesday. SINGLES - Megan Moon, GP, d. Track ROSEBURG TWILIGHT MEET - At Roseburg, Taylor Jones and Jennifer Lint of Roseburg each took first place in two events at the Roseburg Twilight meet. Jones grabbed the top spot in the javelin with a mark of 127 feet and in the shot put with a toss of 37-6. She added a third place in the discus with a mark of 111-0. Lint's leap of 16-5 earned first place in the long jump and added a triple jump title with a mark of 36-0. In boys' competition, the Indians' Chris Roberts won the 1,500 meters in 4:00.5. He also finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:02.
