Former Mojo Cafe building goes on rental block next week One of the Ashland building's owners suggests menu, managers to blame for the club's demise ASHLAND - A downtown building that formerly housed Mojo Cafe will go up for rent next week. The nightclub and restaurant closed in early December, nine months after it opened. Building owners Allan Sandler and Ed Bemis hope to attract another nightclub operation to the site. "There's some interest out of San Francisco," said Sandler. "They want to reopen a club." If a nightclub tenant can't be found, Sandler said Ashland may end up with more office space. The restaurant's cuisine and bad management may have led to the club's failure, said Sandler. A broad-based menu might have brought in more customers. The restaurant featured Cajun food. Entertainers drew good crowds but may have been too costly for a profitable operation, said Sandler. "I think it was just bad management," said Sandler. "You really need to go with professionals that need to know what they are doing, not taking anything away from the people that were operating it." Sandler and Bemis were not part of the limited liability corporation that ran the club. Club co-owners included David Walper, Steve Owsley and Eric Turner. They could not be reached for comment. "Luckily it didn't go bankrupt," said Sandler. He said the company was able to settle with all its creditors. "If it doesn't turn into a club within three to six months we will probably turn it into an office building," said Sandler. "But it's just too beautiful ...
