The Black Tornado let a nine-point lead slip away, only to rally for a 63-61, season-opening victory over Churchill in the North gym. Junior Anna Lilly sank two free throws with two seconds remaining, then stole the inbounds pass to seal the win. Churchill fell to 0-2 after a loss Monday to Roseburg. "It was a pretty exciting way to open up," said Karrick. "You could tell they had a game under their belts by the way they came back. "I thought our girls did a good job at the end, having the ball for one last possession and getting something out of it." North led by nine with three minutes remaining in the third quarter before the Lancers trimmed the deficit to one heading into the final quarter. Churchill grabbed the lead and extended to a four-point advantage with two minutes left behind post Jessica Steigleman’s 10 fourth-quarter points. Sophomore point guard Kailey Bostwick drained a 3-pointer to help North close the gap and eventually pull even with 30 seconds remaining. Kirsten Mellbye led the Tornado with 18 points and also contributed four steals. Melissa Eastwold grabbed eight rebounds and Bostwick dished out five assists and had three steals to go with her 17 points. Steigleman led all scorers with 26 points. "We want to push the ball, and I thought we created the kind of pace we wanted," said Karrick. "For the most part, it was a clean game. We just did a good job at the end getting a ‘W.’" CHURCHILL (61) — Ryan 0, Benson 3, Dyer 0, Peterson 2, McVain 6, J. Steigleman 26, Robertson 21, South 3, Arnsberry 0, R. Steigleman 0.
