Local business: Tax examiners board penalizes Selma preparer The State Board of Tax Service Examiners assessed civil penalties of $4,600 against Emil G. Glemba of Selma for preparing, advising or assisting in the preparation of personal tax returns for valuable consideration when he was not licensed. During 1999 Glemba committed 10 violations of preparing, advising and assisting for a fee. Glemba has never been licensed by the tax board as preparer or consultant. Bear Creek harvest will conclude in two weeks Bear Creek Corp. reports its harvest of pears, trademarked as Royal Riviera, will be complete within two weeks. More than 10,000 of the expected 12,400 tons have been picked since Aug. 21. Bear Creek harvested 9,500 tons of pears last year. The pears will be used in approximately 65 percent of the 80 million Harry and David gifts shipped during the coming holiday season. Free seminar planned on recent tax law changes Rick Wilson and Roger Graves, licensed investment professionals from Strand, Atkinson, Williams & York, will host free seminars on recent tax law changes under the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. The tax changes, while straightforward themselves, are made complex by their staggered effective dates and gradual implementation over the coming decade. The changes affect everything from estate tax to college savings taxation, and have even created a new tax bracket. The Medford seminar will be at 2 p. m. Oct. 4 at the Rogue Valley Country Club, and the Grants Pass session will be at 6:30 p.m. at Riverside Convention Center. Classes scheduled for beginning investors The local chapter of the National Association of Investors begins a five-part series of classes for beginning investors in fundamental investing. The series runs five consecutive Saturdays, starting at 9 a.m. Oct. 6 at Medford Fabrication Conference Room, 1109 Court St. Registration is required and the fee is $45. Class aids American Indian business startups A 10-week class, providing the framework for a successful business start-up is being offered by Southern Oregon University�s Small Business Development Center and an American Indian organization. The classes are open to anyone, but it will focus on the complexities and cultural challenges inherent to doing business as an American Indian. The course at Stevenson Memorial Union begins Oct. 2. The cost is $100. For information call Kristy Offineer at 552-1744 BCVSA earns certificate for financial reporting The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to Bear Creek Valley Sanitary Authority by the Government Finance Officers of the United States and Canada for its comprehensive annual financial report. The award was presented to John Zenz, finance director. The GFOA is a nonprofit organization serving 14,000 government finance professionals.
