Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 8, 2005 Cold expected after hard rain Snow on Siskiyou Summit could turn icy as freezing temperatures arrive tonight From staff reports Sunday’s rainfall of 1.27 inches at the Medford airport broke the previous record of exactly 1 inch measured on Nov. 6, 1912. The steady rain dwindled to scattered showers by Monday evening, falling short of another record. About .84 inch was measured between midnight and 9:30 p.m. Monday at the weather service’s airport gauge. The record for the date was 1.23 inches. But out with the rain meant in with the cold as today’s forecast calls for no precipitation but lows as cold as 28 degrees tonight on the Rogue Valley floor, said Chuck Glaser, spokesman at the National Weather Service’s Medford forecast office.. Travelers were stymied Sunday and early Monday by a dropping snow level that cloaked local mountain passes, said John Vial, district manager for the Oregon Department of Transportation. "Almost nobody has chains," Vial said. Advertisement Early on Monday ODOT crews and Oregon State Police were stopping Interstate 5 motorists outside Ashland who didn’t have the snow chains required to traverse the Siskiyou Summit. Approximately 2 inches of snow had fallen on the pass by 9:30 a.m. Chains also were required on Highway 140 at Lake of the Woods, where 3 inches of snow fell Monday. Although snow packed the surface of Highway 66 at the Greensprings Summit, ODOT only advised motorists to carry chains. Sexton Summit on I-5 north of Grants Pass had no snowfall. No serious traffic accidents were reported Monday, although OSP troopers handled countless cases of cars that had spun out, slid into guardrails and rear-ended other vehicles, said OSP Capt. Kurt Barthel. After a calm afternoon, more spin-outs were reported on I-5’s Siskiyou Summit as the temperature dropped Monday night. There were no highway closures.
