McCandless named third-team all-state Cascade Christian High girls basketball coach Loren King finally convinced Christine McCandless to shoot the ball more often this season, and that advice helped the Challenger center earned all-state accolades. McCandless, a 5-foot-10 senior, was named to the Class 2A third team that was announced Wednesday. McCandless averaged 12 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots for the Challengers, who posted a 21-9 record and advanced to the Class 2A state tournament for the second straight year. "We definitely needed Christine to take the ball to the basket more often this season and she responded," King said. "She's always been a tremendous defender and rebounder but she's such an unselfish player that she passed up good shots in the past. "This season, that wasn't the case." McCandless' shining moment came in a December tournament against St. Bernard's of Eureka, Calif. Playing in the South Medford High gym, McCandless erupted for 25 points in the second half and 34 in all to lead Cascade Christian to a 78-67 victory. McCandless also had a memorable night on Feb. 29 when she led Cascade to perhaps its biggest win in school history. She scored seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Challengers stunned previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked City Christian 50-46 in a first-round game of the Class 2A state tournament in Pendleton. McCandless was a three-year starter and a four-year varsity performer for the Challengers. One of McCandless' rivals in the Southern Cascade League -- junior Hollis Baley of Lost River -- was also selected to the third team. FIRST TEAM Becky Bracelin, 5-10, jr.
