His passenger, Robert Baker, died. It came out that Bush had a similar incident that killed a person in his car nine years earlier. It was reported that Bush’s trial would start in April, but I haven’t seen any more coverage. — Heather H., Beaverton We take the blame for not updating that story, Heather. John Patrick Bush was scheduled for trial on April 6, but his defense attorney asked for a continuance. Bush now is scheduled to face a jury on Sept. 21 on charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and driving under the influence of intoxicants. The manslaughter charge carries a minimum prison term of six years and three months under Oregon’s mandatory sentencing law, Measure 11. Nearly nine years before the April 2003 death of Robert Baker, Bush was the driver in a crash on Obenchain Road that killed 21-year-old David Edward Buchanan of Central Point. Bush was indicted on charges of second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in that case, but the charges were dismissed. He instead received a probation sentence after pleading guilty to DUII. Bush, 30, of Eagle Point, was arrested in October on the latest case and spent more than four months in jail before posting $5,000 bond. He remains free pending trial.
