Oregon Department of Transportation said the work will start Monday, May 18, and is expected to be completed by noon Friday, May 22. During the work, commercial truck traffic normally needing to access offramp will need to detour to exit 66 at Hugo, then come back. ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said all other traffic can get off at exit 58, then take Highland Avenue to Merlin. All other ramps will remain open. In a news release, project officials said JRT Construction of Oakland, Ore., will make safety and operational improvements to the interchange, such as adding a second northbound lane, a new traffic signal at the end of the offramp, and construction of a westbound receiving lane on Merlin Road, which will run to its intersection with Monument Drive, where a right-turn lane will be installed. In addition, the existing signal at Merlin Road and Monument Drive will be modified, and a new signal will be installed at Highland Avenue and Merlin Road. "The closure to rebuild the offramp should be the biggest inconvenience to travelers, but it's necessary to build a dual left-turn lane," project manager Ted Paselk said in the release. "The construction schedule is timed to finish this stage before the busy summer tourist season."
