February 02. 2016 12:01AM Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 2, 1916 Feb. 2, 1916 HOW TO COMBAT APPLE SCAB TOLD BY PATHOLOGIST County Pathologist Cate and Horticultural Commissioner Allen will meet with the fruit growers and farmers of the Ashland district at Ashland Saturday afternoon for a discussion of orchard conditions and farm matters generally. What to do with the fruit pests and when to do it will be the important specialty for discussion, and pear and apple scab will be singled out for special treatment. Pathologist Cate has numerous excellent studies showing the birth and development of the scab. This exhibition in stereopticon views simplifies the subject so all may understand it. At the meeting in this city Saturday Mr. Cate used these views to show the life history of the scab fungus, modes of growth, of natural and artificial inoculation, time required for various periods of growth, period of inoculation, etc. When its life history is known, explained Mr. Cate in a very interesting address, intelligent applications of spray may be made and results in its control obtained. The habits of its growth with regard to moisture relations are important. The absolute necessity of timely application of spray, "thoroness" in the application and the proper spray mixtures are all shown. In immediate conjunction with that comes the condition or stage of bud development of trees and its direct relation or bearing to time of spray application. Views are shown of the proper stage of development of buds for the first application. Pathologist Cate gave general recommendations, briefly as follows, in the use of sprays: Use lime-sulfur, dormant strength, when tips of leaves begin to show; use lime-sulfur, diluted 1 to 2, when blossom buds separate in clusters and petals show pink. Third application: Lime-sulfur, 1 to 35, arsenate of lead, 2 to 50 gallons of diluted solution of lime-sulfur in calyx.
