Having experienced the college selection process with my three daughters who attended St. Mary’s School, I decided to take a look. When I typed in Scripps College and then Yale University, the alma maters of my older two daughters, I found much of the same information that the College Board, a private nonprofit corporation, has provided on its website for years. Then I typed in Hillsdale College, where my youngest is currently a sophomore, and I found nothing. It seems Hillsdale College was left out because it does not participate in federal financial aid programs and their mandates, one of which is the reporting of racial demographics, which it does not do and has never done. It doesn’t seem to matter to the Obama administration that Hillsdale College was the first American college to prohibit in its charter any discrimination based on race, religion or sex and became an early force for the abolition of slavery. So I suppose that it is not surprising that the Obama administration, having failed to coerce Hillsdale College into compliance, now pretends that Hillsdale College doesn’t exist. Larry Martin Central Point Trust science Listening only to the news we want to hear, leads to being misinformed. Dennis Sinclair (letters, Sept. 28) falls into this trap. There are not just a few organizations presenting evidence substantiating climate science, there are thousands of published papers in the scientific literature where 97 percent of authors expressing an opinion support the conclusions that the planet is warming and humans are responsible. All professional scientific societies and academies of sciences expressing an opinion also agree. Temperature data for the last two decades do not show an absence of warming. In fact the atmospheric warming has continued at a rate not significantly different from the previous steep climb. Meanwhile the years from 2011 onward (including 2015) show a steeper climb even than before 1998. There is no absence of a definition of greenhouse gases. Seek and ye shall find; they are atmospheric components that absorb infrared (heat) radiation. There are many elements in our environment that have profound effects at low concentrations. Carbon dioxide is not unusual. Dioxin causes reproductive and developmental problems, damages the immune system, interferes with hormones and causes cancer. It is toxic at 0.0000000000001 percent concentration. We should trust science, not the campaign of fossil fuel corporations. Julia M. Rodríguez-Seidler Ashland Move forward, Medford We all ready know that children who live in poverty need extra help and support in order to meet benchmarks for achievement in reading and math literacy, as well as increasing our graduation rates. This is not the time for name calling or finger pointing. We need collaborative partnerships between school districts and our community. Medford 549c finally has a superintendent who listened to students, families and the community to invest in after-school programs. Now we need to broaden the scope and have community partners and the district sit down at the table and figure out how we will provide wrap-around supports to all economically disadvantaged kids in this district. There are waiting lists. There are still plenty of students in need. Move forward, Medford, and let's keep on working at closing the achievement gap. Maggie Eklund Medford Company guilty Johnson & Johnson was found guilty of illegally promoting the sale of Risperdal to children and seniors. Many lawsuits are pending including one about a 12-year-old boy who developed 46 DD breasts caused by the drug. Johnson & Johnson will pay lawsuits and fines but still make millions from their illegal behavior.
