I was born long before vaccines were available. Consequently, I suffered through mumps, measles, chickenpox, scarlet fever, German measles, whooping cough and probably a few others I don’t remember. When I say I suffered, that’s no exaggeration. I spent much of my childhood in a state of misery caused by diseases that today’s children do not have to even think about, as long as they’re vaccinated. An unvaccinated child is a danger to others. What if he or she accidentally infects someone who has a compromised immune system, causing severe illness or even death? I know my parents wouldn’t have hesitated to get me vaccinated if it had been possible back then. My own children were born before the chicken pox and mumps vaccines were available, and I had to see them suffer the same way I did. The rumor that vaccines somehow cause autism has been thoroughly discredited, the British doctor who started all this nonsense has recanted and been stripped of his license to practice medicine after he admitted falsifying the research. There is absolutely no proof that vaccinating is more harmful than not vaccinating. Christine Amorelli, Ashland Honor the founders The great John Adams once said that America would celebrate July Fourth henceforth with "bonfires and Illuminations." He was correct, and we do. It is our birth certificate, and those who initialed the Declaration of Independence were signing their death certificate. We as a nation always should remember important dates, places and births as well as great presidents and those of high accomplishment. Martin Luther King Jr. has been bestowed with such a national honor and we reflect on his place in the pantheon of history concerning the civil rights of all men, but particularly the African American experience. President Ronald Reagan, a white, midwestern male with an old cowboy persona, signed into law a national holiday for Doctor King. We as Americans remember King's memorable words of cashing in the 'promissory note,' which he said we need to be true to. What was the promissory note? Why, it was that great document saying that "all men are created equal." This is where the Rev. King got his authority and power to accomplish a great movement. However, the words are from Mr. Jefferson, who gave them to a country of Washington, Lincoln, Madison and Jackson. Maybe we should honor them as well. This money will directly aid the wider community through the Thursday night community dinners and the George Fox ACCESS food pantry, feeding hundreds each month. The partnership the church has established with the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation is vital to alleviating food insecurity in the Rogue Valley. Thank you to the foundation for blessing the community in incredible ways. The church is extremely grateful and humbled.
