Kirk Michael Smith, 24, the suspected burglar, was booked in the Jackson County Jail on second-degree burglary and second-degree theft charges, but was released on his own recognizance, jail officials said. During the alleged break-in, he had planned to make off with about $1,200 in property, including a wool hall runner, an instant coffee maker, a leather bag, wine glasses, a tape player, towels and two books, police said. The Pulitzer never left the building, though it had been removed from its usual spot and placed in a second-floor conference room, possibly to be taken from the building later, officials speculated. Investigators were first alerted to Smith's presence just after 10 p.m. when cleaning crews heard some banging on an outside door and windows on a patio on the building's southeast corner. Smith allegedly hopped an 8-foot wall that surrounds the patio, then climbed up to a second-floor balcony and entered the building through an unsecured door. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said that during an initial search, a responding officer found a green shoulder bag stashed in some bushes. Thinking its owner would return, the officer sat in wait for about 15 minutes until he heard some crashing noises and rustling in nearby bushes. Police found Smith holding a Keurig brand coffee maker. Police said Smith appeared intoxicated and slurred his speech. He also had left a trail of footprints in the building and dirty marks on the walls. Court records show no criminal history in Jackson County for Smith.
