Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 10, 2005 FUTURE POSSIBILITIES IN FOOTBALL FRONTIER CONFERENCE Carroll College Montana Tech University of Montana-Western Rocky Mountain College Montana State-Northern University Advertisement Eastern Oregon University Albertson College Southern Oregon University Despite being turned down for admission by the Frontier Conference in 2003, the door could be opened for SOU should Albertson College choose to revive its football program. Albertson and the Frontier Conference were discussing the potential of the two coming together when the college put off for two years its decision to bring back football. Adding a seventh team in Albertson would mean the Frontier would have to abandon its double round-robin schedule, making it more likely the conference would be willing to add another team as well. GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Central Washington University Western Washington University Humboldt State University Western Oregon University Southern Oregon University Considering the lack of NAIA and NCAA Division II football programs on the West Coast, the NCAA may be willing to back down from its hard-line stance that prevents institutions from splitting affiliation between the NAIA and NCAA levels. In this scenario, SOU would need an exemption for NCAA Division II status in football only. The GNAC already plays a double round-robin format, which would allow SOU to play eight conference games and two nonconference games. FORM NEW NAIA CONFERENCE Humboldt State University Western Oregon University Azusa Pacific University Menlo College Southern Oregon University This scenario would fall into place if SOU isn’t granted an exemption from the NCAA to split its affiliation between NAIA and NCAA Division II and should Central Washington and Western Washington opt to leave the GNAC for the North Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Given Western Oregon’s struggles at Division II, this would open the door for the Wolves to return to the NAIA along with Humboldt State, although potentially in football only for the latter. As another NAIA independent, Azusa Pacific would welcome a chance to join a league, while Menlo College may be brought in from the NCAA Division III ranks to add depth to the conference. REMAIN INDEPENDENT A wait-and-see approach is necessary for all these scenarios, leaving SOU to plow ahead as an NAIA independent. If opportunity doesn’t arise to join an existing conference or create a new one, SOU administrators say they are comfortable with the program’s independent status and will seek alternatives such as a "money game" at an NCAA Division I-AA program to offset funding issues. ELIMINATE THE PROGRAM The least attractive of all alternatives, from the administration’s viewpoint down to the fans’. All options would have to be exhausted for this scenario to be seriously considered.
