Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 23, 2005 Mother, baby escape fire By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune Not yet 4 months old, Marley DeAngelo remained quiet Monday as her mother cradled her, sobbing at the sight of the family’s burning west Medford home. While the DeAngelos escaped their single-story, wood-framed house in the 300 block of Clark Street without injury, little Marley’s possessions were destroyed in a fire reported at about 5 p.m., her father said. "All of the baby’s stuff was in the room that went up first," said Tony DeAngelo, who was shopping for his family when he got a cell-phone call from his wife, Meghan. "I got here about two seconds before the fire trucks," he said. "Everybody’s OK, but we lost pretty much everything." Medford fire investigators did not know late Monday what sparked the blaze. When crews arrived at the home, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the rear of the structure, said Medford Fire Chief Dave Bierwiler. Advertisement A neighboring residence was briefly threatened by the fire when a breeze pushed flames in its direction, Bierwiler said. "We were able to quickly knock those flames down," he said. Efforts to fight the fire were complicated when crews discovered large bees’ nests near the home’s front and back doors. Bierwiler said no firefighters were stung, but the bees were not pleased when crews arrived and began spraying water on the burning structure. Tony DeAngelo’s grandfather, Luther Riley, said Marley’s mother acted fast after realizing her house was on fire. "She was cooking dinner and she smelled smoke," said Riley. "She went and got the baby from the bedroom." Tony DeAngelo said his family just moved into the neighborhood about five months ago. "I’d been trying so hard to get into this house," he said. "At least I have insurance." He said the family, which owns a dog that also escaped the fire, planned to stay with relatives until they can find a new home. A chaplain responded to the house shortly after the fire was reported, a regular occurrence when a family is displaced by fire, Bierwiler said.
