Sorry George, that horse has left the barn and is well into the next county. When the court stopped a recount and appointed George Bush president ("This ruling shall not be used as precedent," they said); when they invented out of whole cloth a religious right for a corporation (corporations have religion? Who knew?); when they decided that an entity not even mentioned in the Constitution (a corporation again, what a surprise!) has a right to free speech, and that money is that speech; they have already trampled the poor document near to death. To me the words "Equal protection before the law" are totally clear and unmistakable. And that a law is interpreted in the context of the entire document is totally settled law and common sense. Did you think that the ACA was the first law with a misprint in it? I have advice for George. Tell the Republicans in Congress to impeach Justice Roberts. This will keep the Republican Congress and Fox News occupied with a new shiny object for months. And Obama will get to appoint his replacement. Steve Soar Medford Thanks for grants This quarter St. Vincent de Paul in Medford received two donations to our Utility Disconnect Assistance program. We were awarded $15,000 from the Carpenter Foundation and $5,000 from the Medford Water Commission. Both of these organizations have been extremely generous over the years and we would like to express our appreciation for this generosity. These grant funds are being combined with our internally generated funds to help our clients to avoid termination of or to reconnect their water, electricity or natural gas utilities. Without this assistance we would not be able to provide the level of assistance we do to our neighbors in need. St. Vincent and the citizens of the Rogue Valley are indebted to these organizations. Carola Lacy Ashland The pope's message Pope Francis said our relationship to the environment is a moral and spiritual one. The callous and pathologically maladapted abuse and adulterate their own. Is there any difference if against our environment? Are we not all made from the same earth? It does not matter if you believe in God, science or humanity, we are all bound by time and gravity. We are all interdependent. This is indisputable. We owe it to our own selfish desires to view this planet in the long term. “If we truly are the smartest most evolved beings in recent existence; knowing what we know, we would want to make our planet last another 5 billion years.” — Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Why aren’t we doing that? The only conclusion is to admit that reasoning and dialogue, two of our species' higher qualities, have degraded to the crudest and most basic form of communication: violence. Is that enough of an emergency? Please, take days off from driving.
