Loggers miss out on volleyball upset BUTTE FALLS - Led by a pack of sophomores, the Butte Falls volleyball team nearly pulled off an upset of Class 2A Glendale on Wednesday. Asia Million had a team-high seven kills and six digs to lead the sophomore-driven Class 1A Loggers in the 11-15, 15-13, 8-15 loss to Glendale. Fellow sophomore Brianna Smeltz and senior Jessica Dunlap each had three aces and junior Krystle Rowley distributed eight assists. Butte Falls (0-2) dropped its season-opener against Cascade Christian - another 2A opponent - in tournament action. "We like to do the trial-by-fire thing," said Butte Falls coach Mike Harrington of his team's rigorous non-conference slate. "It gives you a better idea of where you're at before jumping into league play." After a back-and-forth loss in the first game, Butte Falls stormed out to a 5-0 lead behind the serving of Dunlap. Glendale closed the gap several times, the last being 14-13, before Butte Falls closed out the game. But it was short-lived momentum for the Loggers as Glendale cruised to an easy match-clinching victory. "We jumped on them in Game 2," said Harrington. "They pretty much controlled the third one." The Loggers next travel to Days Creek for a non-conference, 6 p.m. tilt on Friday.
