Brandon Lee Joseph, 24, of the 3300 block of Creek View Drive pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree burglary and second-degree assault in Jackson County Circuit Court. On July 19, Joseph and another person broke into a Medford apartment where the victim was sleeping. One of the two struck the victim with a bat, and he was knocked unconscious, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. Joseph's court-appointed defense attorney Andrew Vandergaw said a friend joined Joseph in the burglary. The friend has not been arrested, and Vandergaw said it was that person who struck the victim with the bat. "My client is not responsible personally for the injuries sustained," Vandergaw said. Joseph said he has a substance-abuse problem. "Obviously what I did was wrong," he said. "There's no going back." Joseph was convicted of harassment in 2012 and first-degree theft in 2013. In the 2013 case, he broke into a relative's apartment and stole an iPad and iPod Touch. When police arrested him the same day as the burglary, he had already traded the iPad for methamphetamine, according to an affidavit.
