Tornado bounces back to rout Tribe Baseball roundup ROSEBURG -- Stung by a 10-7 loss in the first game of a Southern Oregon Conference baseball doubleheader, North Medford raked Roseburg pitching for 16 hits in the second game as the Black Tornado salvaged a split with a 10-2 victory Tuesday at Legion Field. North scored once in each of its first two turns at-bat then broke open the nightcap with a six-run, third-inning outburst. The Tornado sent 11 runners to the plate, lashed six hits and took advantage of two Roseburg errors to push its lead to 8-0. There were two out and one runner on when Ken Halpin and Charlie Jensen stroked consecutive RBI singles. Then Phil Ouelette reached on catcher's interference, followed by back-to-back doubles by Steve DeClerck and Nate Mayben. Matt Brownell capped the inning with an RBI single. Mayben was 4-for-5 in the game and 7-for-8 on the day. DeClerck was 3-for-5 in the contest and 6-for-9 on the day. Brownell was also 3-for-5 in the nightcap. "Mayben wasn't real overpowering, but he mixed in his slider and fastball real well and kept us off balance," Roseburg coach Ron Goodell said. "I could see why they had him in the leadoff spot though. They want to get him as many bats as possible." In the first game, North battled back from deficits of 3-0 and 7-4 to tie it in the top of the sixth only to see the Indians break a 7-all tie with three runs on three hits and an intentional walk, in the bottom of the inning. Jensen mashed a leadoff home run to left field to start the sixth. Then Maybe singled and scored on DeClerck's triple to tie it. DeClerck later scored on an apparent sacrifice fly that would've given North an 8-7 lead. But he was called out for leaving too early. North coach Brett Wolfe was tossed out while debating the play and when the Tornado took the field second baseman Jarred Pagnini was also ejected. Both sat out the second game. Roseburg responded in rapid fashion at the plate when Matt Liston drilled a one-out, bases-loaded double to left-center to drive in three runs. DeClerck drove in three runs and Mayben scored twice and had two RBIs in the loss. "Probably the difference in the first game was defensive plays by our outfield," Goodell said. "We ended up with two double-plays on fly balls. North plays a non-conference contest against Del Norte 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Miles Field, before returning to SOC action with a doubleheader against South Medford at noon Saturday. SOUTH MEDFORD SPLITS -- At Eugene, South Medford defeated South Eugene 10-2 in the opener, but loss to North Eugene 11-1 in a non-conference twin bill at North Eugene High. Ryan Bock led the South Medford attack in the opener. The senior catcher collected three hits and four RBIs. Tony Conklin slammed a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Panthers against South Eugene. Bock accounted for one of the South Medford's three hits in the five-inning nightcap. Sakraida's bases-loaded blast helped the Mustangs take a 7-0 first-inning lead. North Valley fought back to grab a 14-9 advantage after five innings only to watch the Mustangs push across six runs in the sixth. Ryan Wilson had three hits and two RBIs to pace the Mustangs, while Sam Jarrett went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jaritt Dewaard 3-for-5 with two doubles for North Valley (6-4, 3-3 Skyline). The victory improved the No. 9-ranked Pirates to 5-1 in the Skyline Conference and 9-1 overall. Illinois Valley fell to 0-4 in league play. Phoenix trailed 5-4 after 4 innings before erupted for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth. Pierson's RBI single and Joel Bath's RBI double put the Pirates ahead to stay in the fifth. Dunlap, who is batting over .500 on the season, went 2-for-3 and had two RBIs.
