If so, how will the county clerks be able to compare their signatures on their ballots to know they are who they say they are? — Rob, Medford The answers to your questions, Rob, are yes, yes and DMV. OK, next question ... wait, you want more? OK, here you go: Yes, new drivers who are at least 17 years old will automatically be registered, although they must turn 18 by election day in order to vote. In fact, the automatic registration applies not just to new drivers, but to any Oregon driver not already on the voting rolls. Yes, they will automatically get a ballot in the mail, unless they respond to a notification by their county clerk and specifically decline to register to vote. When they are contacted, they also will be asked which political party, if any, with which they wish to affiliate. Drivers who are contacted by their county clerks and do not respond to the communications will be registered as non-affiliated voters. But they will be registered and will receive a ballot in the mail. Which leads to your final question about comparing signatures. Well, guess what, Rob? When you register with the Department of Motor Vehicles to drive in Oregon, you must sign a document attesting that the information you have provided is accurate. That signature will be shared electronically with the Secretary of State's Office, which will in turn share it with the appropriate county. And then, Rob, you will become part of that great American tradition — receiving political robocalls during dinner time. Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
