The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory — issued when periods of snow are expected to cause difficulties for motorists — from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. today. The Cascades could see 4 to 9 inches, with 3 to 6 inches expected along parts of the Siskiyous. The Mt. Ashland Ski Area could see up to 8 inches. Several area highways are expected to be impacted, including Highway 62 near Crater Lake, highways 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake, Highway 140 near Lake of the Woods and Interstate 5 leading up to the Siskiyou Summit and Mount Ashland. Southwest winds of up to 25 mph are expected to accompany the chilly weather, weather officials said. "Travel will be difficult due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility associated with falling and blowing snow," the advisory said. The snowfall is expected to start this morning and increase in intensity throughout the day, peaking with what forecasters call "moderate to heavy snow" this afternoon and evening. It's expected to taper off overnight.
