The Rogue Gallery & Art Center, 40 S. Bartlett St., and Art du Jour Gallery, 213 E. Main St., will both stay open until 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, for the monthly event. Janus Innes, the featured artist for September at the Rogue Gallery, is displaying mixed-media paintings — some with recognizable subject matter and others that are completely abstract. The exhibit will be displayed through Oct. 10 in the community gallery. Her large-scale painting "Skyline" features black skyscrapers silhouetted by a glowing sky above and glimmering water below. Innes used gold leaf to bring a luminous sheen to the work. Flecks of gold against the black skyscrapers create the impression of glittering city lights. Viewers would never guess that Innes used a bland, everyday material — cardboard — beneath the paint to give the piece added texture. A completely abstract piece titled "Strata" uses a layer of gauze topped with gold, copper, sienna and blue paint. Small metallic squares on the surface bring to mind mysterious geometric fossils buried over eons of time. "Color inspires me," Innes says. "I like them to be rich and warm colors, so when someone hangs a painting, there will be drama on the wall." Other paintings feature identifiable subjects, such as a fish and a tulip. An exhibit of monotype, monoprint, lithograph, linocut and woodcut prints by artists from Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts in Eastern Oregon will be displayed through Friday, Sept. 26, in the main gallery.  Fans of traditional landscape painting will appreciate the work of Richard Woods, the featured artist for September at Art du Jour Gallery. In the small painting "Solitude," a man with a horse sits before a campfire, surrounded by snow-covered pines. Snow-capped mountains glow in the fading light of an early winter sunset as he settles in for a long, cold night. While Woods portrays winter's chill in "Solitude," he perfectly captures the heat of summer in "Summer Afternoon." Painted in a more Impressionistic, en plein air style, the painting depicts cows resting in the shade of an oak tree, the tall, dried-out grass of late summer almost obscuring the animals. One can almost feel the waves of heat and the smell of grass emanating from the baking pastureland. Woods' "Willamette Valley Spring" shows sheep grazing and a lamb amid a verdant Oregon landscape. In addition to exhibiting the landscapes by Woods, a gallery member, Art du Jour Gallery is featuring the mixed-media sculptures and collages of guest artist Corinne Stubson. Many of her works use folded or disassembled books, a treat for people who love both books and art. Stubson meticulously folded page after page of three books to make them look like Chinese lanterns for the three-dimensional piece "Lanterns." For "Book of Spells and Spirits," she turned a vintage book into a miniature apothecary. Cut-out sections of the book are filled with tiny drawers with labels like "Talismans" and "Patent Medicine." A vintage illustration of a woman and an antique key complete the altered book sculpture. Art du Jour Gallery's regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
