South surges into title game RED BLUFF, Calif. � Defense was the name of the game for the South Medford High boys basketball team on Friday night. The Panthers held Red Bluff, Calif., to 35 percent shooting from the field en route to a 69-54 victory over the Spartans to advance to the championship game of the Red Bluff Daily News Holiday Classic. Sophomore post Boomer Marshall had a season-high 19 points and junior guard Ryan Heil 17 to pace the Panthers, who improved their season record to 5-1. South Medford meets Pleasant Valley, Calif., at 7:30 tonight in the championship game of the eight-team tournament. Pleasant Valley defeated Marimonte, Calif., 69-50 on Friday. "This was by far our best game of the season," South Medford coach Dennis Murphy said. "We played extremely well defensively. They didn�t get very many good looks at the basket." South Medford, playing for the second straight game without leading scorer Eric Fiegi, led just 27-23 at halftime but went on a 23-14 run in the third period to take control. Marshall registered 10 rebounds, nailed a 3-pointer and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in a solid all-around performance. Defensively, Murphy sang the praises of reserves Pat Lower and Alan Johnson. Jon Tenney led Red Bluff with 18 points. ASHLAND 55, WEST VALLEY 46 � At Anderson, Calif., Ashland bounced back from a turnover-plagued loss on Thursday to pick up a win in the second round of the eight-team Anderson Tournament. The Grizzlies, who committed 23 turnovers in a 56-49 loss to Hayward, Calif., on Thursday, coughed it up only nine times to move into the consolation championship game today against Oroville, Calif. at 1:30 p.m. After watching their lead shrivel to one, 23-22, at the half, Ashland slowly pulled away from West Valley, of Anderson. Noah Shields led the Grizzlies with 19 points despite being one of three Ashland starters with four fouls and sitting out the entire third period. SOUTH UMPQUA 79, PHOENIX 77, 2OT � At Tri City, Matt Snyder�s 3-point play with six seconds lifted unbeaten South Umpqua (6-0) past Phoenix. Phoenix led 31-22 at the half, but the 6-foot-9 Snyder and Jason Stevenson rallied the Lancers, who tied it, 61-61, at the end of regulation. It was tied, 69-69, after the first overtime. Kevin Jeffers, a 6-foot senior, scored a career high 28 points for Phoenix. His previous high was 12 against Glide.
