Hendricks leads Phoenix boys GRANTS PASS - Back at his accustomed position, John Hendricks is up to his old tricks for the Phoenix High boys soccer team. Hendricks scored three goals and dished two assists while manning the central midfield for the Pirates in an 8-0 rout of North Valley at the Josephine County Fairgrounds on Thursday. Hendricks began his senior season at forward for coach Dennis Flenner, but after a District 6-opening loss to Hidden Valley, Hendricks shifted back to the central midfield spot he played as a sophomore and junior. Phoenix, now 2-1 in District 6, hasn't looked back. "No question, John's our go-to guy," said Flenner, who has 13 lettermen back from the squad that finished second in the district last season. "We decided we're going to put him back in the middle of the field and let him run it, and we're reaping the benefits." Senior forward Gerardo Serna, sophomore midfielder John Feeney, senior forward Devin Wilson, senior forward David Peterson and senior forward Meadow Lacy scored a goal apiece for the Pirates. Feeney, Lacy, junior fullback John Chavez and senior midfielder Craig Cooper had one assist each. HIDDEN VALLEY 9, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 - At Cave Junction, seniors Irie Spann, Mo Arteaga and Trevor Nowak and junior Dillon Borta each tallied two goals to lead to a rout of Illinois Valley. Senior goalkeeper Tim VanderStoel not only got the shutout win for the Mustangs (4-0 District 6), but he also scored a goal on a penalty kick. The Cougars were outshot 28-4 and fell to 0-3 in the district. HENLEY 1, ROGUE RIVER 0 - At Klamath Falls, Joe Salvati scored in the second minute, and Henley held on for the Skyline Conference win. Stuart Ward assisted on Salvati's goal. Non-conference Boys Soccer SOUTH MEDFORD 4, CHURCHILL 1 - In their final tune-up before Southern Oregon Conference play kicks off Tuesday, the Panthers (4-1-1 overall) jumped ahead in the 12th minute at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park and never looked back. Justin Baldoni finished an assist from fellow senior forward Pat Lower for a 1-0 edge. Senior fullback Cody George made a long run and blasted home a 20-yard, right-footed shot to make it 2-0 in the 36th minute. Lower brought down a loose ball inside the Lancers' penalty box and converted in the 41st minute. Churchill forward Steven Clayton took advantage of a chip over the top of the South defense to make it 3-1 in the 78th. Sophomore forward Corey O'Neill completed the scoring in the final minute despite a hard collision with the Lancers' goalkeeper. NORTH MEDFORD 1, SPRINGFIELD 1 - At Springfield, senior Dan Torrey scored seven minutes into the second half to give the Black Tornado a tie in non-conference play. Senior Zach Taylor assisted on the Torrey goal. The Black Tornado held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. North Medford finished non-conference play at 2-1-1 and begins SOC action Tuesday at home against Crater. CRATER 3, NORTH BEND 1 - At North Bend, Crater recovered from a successful North Bend penalty kick in the opening minutes to even its record at 2-2. Senior central midfielder Jason Licato tied it at 1-1 when his corner kick bounced off the Bulldogs' goalkeeper and into the net in the 23rd minute. Junior forward Todd Sesock made it 2-1 five minutes into the second half by finishing a long pass from senior fullback Eric Baker. Sophomore forward Mike Scales closed the scoring with a rebound goal off junior midfielder Jay Delamora's original blast. Crater outshot North Bend, 20-7. Nonetheless, Crater goalkeeper Paco Kurzyniec was needed for six saves, two of which were of the spectacular variety. SOUTH EUGENE 2, ROSEBURG 0 - At Roseburg, the Axeman dealt the Indians their only non-conference loss. The Indians (4-1-2 overall) open SOC play Tuesday at Klamath Union. GRANTS PASS 2, MARSHFIELD 1 - At Coos Bay, Grants Pass pulled out the non-conference victory Wednesday night, but it proved costly as fullback Bobbi Divine and midfielder Diego Vieyra suffered ankle injuries. District 6 Girls Soccer NORTH VALLEY 4, MAZAMA 0 - At Merlin, Malloree Enoch registered a hat trick and an assist as North Valley cruised past Mazama in the District 6 opener for both teams. Shea Miller tallied the other goal for the Knights, who improved to 1-1-2 overall. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 - Junior Victoria Cotta notched two goals to lead Cascade Christian to the non-conference romp at Hawthorne Park. The Challengers (2-1-1) kept the pressure on Illinois Valley's defense all game, outshooting the Cougars 36-1. Cascade Christian finished non-conference play at 2-1-1 and opens District 6 play Thursday at home against Mazama. HENLEY 6, ROGUE RIVER 1 - At Klamath Falls, Becky Schwartz scored in the 22nd minute and the Hornets never looked back in a Skyline conference rout. Henley outshot Rogue River 20-7 and enjoyed a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kelly Birdseye scored the lone goal for Rogue River. Non-conference Girls Soccer NORTH MEDFORD 8, SPRINGFIELD 0 - McKenzie Weiler led the Black Tornado attack with four goals. Nicole Vilarino, Emily Schuler, Katie Driver and Julia Clark each added goals for North Medford, which improved to 3-2 overall. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Seely recorded the shutout. North Medford begins conference play on Tuesday against Crater. CHURCHILL 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 - At Eugene, junior forward Kaily Winther scored two goals to lead Churchill to a non-conference win. Senior Colleen Salisbury scored the lone goal for the Panthers (4-1-1 overall). CRATER 3, NORTH BEND 0 - At Central Point, sophomore forward Sarah Lafontaine scored an unassisted goal two minutes in to get the Comets on their way. Junior forward Jessica Lafontaine, Sarah's older sister, made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute on a 25-yard rocket that was assisted by sophomore stopper Kaitlin Heath. Senior forward Breanna Inlow did the third-goal honors, aided by a pass from senior midfielder Lindsay Kappell. Freshman fullback Courtney Ratty led a stingy defensive effort for Crater (3-2 overall). SOUTH EUGENE 7, ROSEBURG 0 - At Eugene, Jean Kold scored twice to lead South Eugene to the non-conference victory. The Axemen dominated shots on goal with a 25-2 advantage. Katie Ruggles and Lela Mansfield combined for the shutout. Cross country LEAH SAWYER TAKES FIRST AT SKYLINE MEET - At Bear Creek Park, Leah Sawyer of St. Mary's posted a time of 20 minutes, 10 seconds to take first in a Skyline Conference cross country meet. Junior Nathan Geith from Glendale took home first place in the boys division with a time of 17:49.
