It’s part of those ties that has Singler rooting for Carolina in Super Bowl 50, with Singler coming to know Carolina GM Dave Gettleman during his second year of coaching at Long Beach State in 1978. It doesn’t hurt that Gettleman has compiled a top-flight roster. “They’re kind of like the Seattle Seahawks a couple years ago with the flashy quarterback and their defense is playing really solid,” says Singler. “I just think they’re hungry to win a Super Bowl, not that Denver isn’t. But Carolina is playing at a high level right now. It’s hard to pick against a winner like Peyton, but I like how Carolina’s team has responded to the whole season.” PREDICTION Carolina 27, Denver 21 — JOHN BECK Crater Defense, run game will lift Carolina As much as Beck wants to go with his heart, it’s hard letting that overpower his head when it comes to picking Super Bowl 50. Beck can list a host of ways Denver could pull out a victory, even if he can’t even convince himself. Fittingly for Beck, it’s all about the basics. “They both have great defenses, but Carolina is playing really, really good,” says Beck, “and I just think they run the ball more effectively. I want Peyton to go out on a high note but I just think Carolina is hot right now.” Beck doesn’t see Denver able to challenge the Panthers’ defense vertically, leaving the Broncos susceptible unless Carolina gets complacent. “They kind of take breaks a little bit,” says Beck, “and that may not be a good idea against a good team like Denver.” PREDICTION Carolina 28, Denver 14 — CHARLIE HALL Ashland Turnovers hold ticket to winner Super Bowl 50 may as well be a coin flip for Hall, who believes it will all come down to who is unable to hold serve on defense. “I think Carolina can absolutely destroy it and it could be a runaway and then there’s a chance Peyton Manning can play the game of his life and pull it out,” says Hall. “If he’s got one more big game in him, it’ll be interesting and a tight one.” Hall admits it’s cliche but turnovers will rule the day in this one. “We’ve seen Peyton have some pretty bad games and put his team in bad situations, and if he does that, it’s gonna be a blowout,” says Hall. “But if Cam Newton is not ready for that stage, that leaves the door open for Denver.” PREDICTION Carolina 28, Denver 21 — SETH WOMACK Eagle Point Slight edge to Manning, Denver D That Denver defense and a fellow named Peyton Manning are the two biggest reasons Womack is taking the Broncos. “Their defense is the best I have seen in the last couple years,” he says. “What they can do rushing the passer is a lot of fun to watch. On offense, with Peyton Manning back there you can't rule them out. I've got to give the nod to the Denver Broncos and what they have. I think they've got just a little more than what the Panthers have.” That said, Womack praised Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, adding that the Panthers’ offensive line and defense are under-appreciated. “That Carolina offensive line has allowed Cam Newton and the offense to go out and do what they've been doing all year,” he said. PREDICTION Denver 24, Carolina 14 — TOBY WALKER Phoenix Panthers' offense just too much As much as he likes Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, Walker says Carolina has a hands-down advantage. “Denver relies heavily on their defense,” he says. “I think the Broncos can slow down Carolina, but I don't think the Denver offense can keep up. The Panthers are just so dynamic and Cam Newton is tough to stop. I think Carolina is just very well-rounded offensively.” Either way, Walker plans to root hard for Denver. “I am definitely a Peyton Manning fan, so you know I am rooting for the Broncos,” he says. “If the Broncos were to win, it comes down to Peyton Manning and game management. There are not many game managers with his experience. He may not have it all athletically, but mentally he knows how to run the game.” PREDICTION Carolina 35, Denver 14 — JON GETTMAN Cascade Christian Gotta’ love Peyton, but Carolina Gettman is a big fan of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning but isn’t so sure he and his squad can hang with Carolina. “I think, sentimentally, I want to see Denver win because of Peyton Manning and what he’s been through,” Gettman says. “What I find most interesting is that if Denver were to win, I think it may be because of the players surrounding him, including the defense. Peyton hasn’t made the contributions he’s made in the past, but he is Peyton Manning.” Along with their stellar offense, the Panther defense may also have the edge, he adds. “That defensive line is so stout up front and Denver wants to run the ball first,” says Gettman. “I think it could be a pretty good defensive battle both ways.” PREDICTION Carolina 31, Denver 21 — JAMIE YOUNG St. Mary's This could be close, but Carolina wins It is mind versus heart for Young, who believes this game could be tight. He’ll cross his fingers that Denver quarterback Peyton Manning perhaps goes out on top, knowing just how powerful Carolina has been this year. "I think Carolina looks pretty tough,” he says. “I think they are playing with a lot of confidence. Sentimentally, I would like to see the Broncos win. I appreciate everything Peyton Manning has done and have enjoyed watching their defense play.” The Broncos’ pass rush must shine in order for Denver to prevail, Young says. That may be easier said than done against quarterback Cam Newton and his crew, he adds. “The Broncos have an amazing pass rush, but with a QB who can do things like Cam Newton does, I think maybe it neutralizes that,” he says.
