ACLU will hand out awards May 20 at SOU ceremony ASHLAND - The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon invites members and the general public to an awards ceremony from 3 to 5 p.m. May 20, at the Southern Oregon University Stevenson Student Union. Dot Fisher-Smith will receive a Civil Liberties Award in recognition of her lifetime contributions as a peace and nonviolence advocate. She was active in the Vietnam War peace movement, and has continued with many other draft resistance, anti-nuclear, environmental and campaign finance reform activities. She has been jailed for civil disobedience on more than one occasion. In the 1980s, Fisher-Smith assisted the founder of Peace House, an Ashland organization advocating peaceful protest and dialogue as a way to improve the world. She recently marched in Washington in support of campaign finance reform. In Oregon, she supported the Measure 6 initiative for public financing of election campaigns. Harry Detwiler will be honored with a Commendation Award for his highly public role in the Measure 3 campaign, the civil-forfeiture reform initiative on the ballot last November. Detwiler was an outspoken advocate for civil forfeiture reform following his loss of property through civil forfeiture practices. ACLU state board member Fred Neal will present the awards. The 1992 recipient of the ACLU of Oregon Civil Liberties Award, Neal is an activist leader for religious freedom, gay rights and free speech issues. The event is hosted by the Southern Oregon Chapter representing ACLU members in Josephine, Klamath and Jackson counties.
