Mail Tribune 100: Aug. 12, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 12, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 12, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 12, 1916 MEDFORD SUNDAY AT LITHIA PARK AUGUST 20 August 20th will be Medford Sunday at Ashland, the attracting feature will be a concert given by the Medford band at Lithia park. The band will be accompanied by probably the largest contingent that has yet invaded Ashland on a Sunday. The week's engagement offered the band by the Chetco Carnival association will not be accepted, as the members would find it difficult to leave their employment. It may be astonishing to learn that during the past three months of the concert season, the band has rehearsed and submitted to the public no less than one hundred selections, overtures, etc. This amount has had to be worked up in order to give the program variety. The average amateur musical organization usually rehearses the same program over and over for weeks before offering it to the public. Our band has not the time or privilege to do this; week after week they offer at the City park a complete change of program. Next week Bandmaster Rowland and his musicians promise to even surpass the efforts of the last week's performance which was pronounced the best of the season. The program will include works of such masters as Franz von Supper, Arthur Sullivan, Johann Strauss and John Philip Sousa. The popular opera "Mikado" will also be heard at one of the next concerts given by the band. LOCAL AND PERSONAL At the regular council meeting next Tuesday, a charter amendment, already drawn by City Attorney McCabe, will be presented for passage, giving the council power to act in settling up the paving situation in Medford. The amendment, as drawn, gives the council power to refund up to 50 percent of the money paid for paving, that is to refund or reassess, as the case may be in each instance, so that the city pays half the paving cost and the property owner pays the other half. The amendment also gives the council authority to issue bonds or warrants wherewith to refund paying bonds now outstanding.
