LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 5 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Jan. 5, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Ban the pipeline I attended a protest meeting against the Canadian pipeline at Central Medford High School. The room was jam-packed. People were standing in the aisles. The mood was against the pipeline. Why would Oregon subscribe to the pipeline, when California and Washington rejected the line for the many hazards it posed? Have we forgotten the terrible oil explosion in the Gulf of Mexico? The Eastern Canada explosion? How many industries were destroyed? How many explosions have taken place in the interim? Fracking will release methane gas, which is more toxic than carbon. Fracking will require enormous amounts of water which we can't spare. As for jobs, labor students inform us the labor statistics are greatly exaggerated. How can we risk Oregon's magnificent natural beauty for a pottage of gold?  Let us remember that the pipeline company is Canadian, and the receiver of the gas is a Pacific Rim country. The U.S. will not benefit. Let us not sacrifice our nation's jewel. Ban the pipeline! Samuel M. Rosen, Ashland Bring tree back to plaza In reference to Ada Hodgen's letter in the Dec. 29 Mail Tribune, I heartily agree. There's been lots of talk about revitalizing downtown Medford. Downtown Medford is Main Street, Main and Central and all around; Vogel Plaza, the Craterian Collier Performing Arts Center, the library, etc. Please bring back the Christmas tree and festivities to Vogel Plaza and Art in Bloom to that same area, and the summer concerts in Bear Creek Park where they belong! Joan Long, Medford College money is from state Parents should know that the first year college program offered by LOGOS (MT Dec. 17) is available to any Oregon high school and the money comes from the state. The first districts to do this (a couple of years ago) found a loophole in state school funding law which allowed them to offer this “fifth year.” Recently, the program has gained legislative support and more schools are making it available to their students. In this program, schools encourage students to stay in high school for a fifth year which is really a first year of community college. The state continues to pay the host school district about $6,500 per student, and the district in turn uses the money to pay for three terms of community college tuition, fees and books, making the year free for students. The district has enough money to hire a counselor or adviser to guide the first-year college students. Simply by helping students attempt college, more stay on. LOGOS has money in its budget because the state puts it there for fifth-year students. Money is available to our public schools as well. The districts simply need to offer the program. Yvonne Rauch, Medford Speak out against LNG It's time to speak up! The Jordan Cove LNG pipeline is proposed to cross the Rogue River using a questionable method. This river is one source of Medford's drinking water. We are facing drought and there are predictions of a potentially major earthquake at some time in the future. This project is not in our best interest. And it is an outrage that eminent domain would even be considered for the benefit of a foreign corporation. The DEQ is currently taking public comments on this issue.
