Newmann pitches no-hitter to lift Royals OLYMPIA, Wash. � North Jackson pitcher Nick Newmann made things easy for his teammates Thursday at the Olympia, Wash., Invitational 10-team wood bat tournament. Newmann flew through seven innings of no-hit ball � just missing a perfect game � in a 4-0 victory over Puyallup, Wash. One walk and an error was the only blemish on the Royals� linescore, with Newmann throwing only 76 pitches against 22 batters. "That�s the best game I�ve ever seen him pitch," said North Jackson coach Tom Britton of his right-handed hurler. "That was a very good team we played today, but he really had a lot of pop on his pitches." Newmann, who also fanned eight, got all the run support he would need in the third on a B.J. McFall sacrifice fly. The Royals added three insurance runs in the seventh when Ryan Garrett blasted a three-run double. MUSTANGS 7-4, EUGENE 8-3 � At Miles Field, the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team committed three errors in the third inning to help Eugene win the opener of the Area 4 doubleheader. The Mustangs rebounded to take the nightcap. In the first game, Shamen Johnson blasted a two-run home run during the six-run third and Eugene held on for the win. Matt Skundrick led Medford with three hits while Dan Bruce and Chuck Shine added two hits apiece. In Game 2, Medford put all four of its runs across in the first inning. Shine started the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly and Shawn Backstrom and Charlie Jensen added RBIs. Eugene made things interesting in the seventh with a run despite no hits, but pitcher Skundrick settled down to close things out for his sixth win of the season. Phil Ouellette and Colby Gonzales each had two hits to lead the Mustangs (29-14, 8-4 Area 4). Medford plays at Roseburg on Saturday. SOUTH MEDFORD 16, PHOENIX 6, 6 innings � Kevin O�Shea, Clint Roderick and Gerad Stebbins each had two hits to lead the South Medford Colts to a six-inning win at South Medford High. The Colts broke open a 6-6 tie with five runs in the fifth and ended it due to the 10-run mercy rule the next inning. South Medford (12-11) hosts a doubleheader against Ashland at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Basketball CRATER SPLITS TWO AT TOURNEY � At Seattle, the Crater girls summer basketball team split its two games at the 50-team Midsummer Night�s Madness 2000 Tournament. The Comets started the day with a 77-20 romp over Woodinville, Wash., in the final game of pool competition in the high school division, then lost a tough exhibition contest to the North Coast Cobras California All-Star team, 84-78. Bre Johnson led the Comets with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds in Game 1. Sarah Pool added 17 points, and Janelle Sapienza scored 10 and pulled down six boards and had a team-high six steals. In their second game, the Comets fell down by 14 points early against the trapping man-to-man style of the Cobras. The Comets rallied back to take the lead, 41-38, at the break after switching to a man defense and a Jody McLeod three-point play. The Cobras, led by All-American guard Mia Fisher, fought back to regain the lead and, after another late surge by Crater, wrapped things up from the foul line. Fisher, a senior-to-be at Oakland High in Oakland, Calif., is coveted by a number of big-name colleges, including a majority of the Pac-10 schools. She finished with 25 points. Amy Denson led the Comets with 23 points and McLeod added 21 and pulled down 13 rebounds. Pool, who limited Fisher to nine second-half points, scored 13 points. Crater begins bracket play today at 2 p.m. Little League Baseball MEDFORD GOLD 12, GRANTS PASS 5 � At Roseburg, Isaac Rolie had two RBIs and pitched the Medford Gold Little League team to a win Wednesday in the 9-10-year-old All-Star tournament. Logan Odom added a home run for the Gold, which improved to 4-1 in the tournament. Medford played Central Point in a late game Thursday. The winner meets unbeaten Roseburg today. MEDFORD 3, BROOKINGS 1 � At Grants Pass, Ryan Odell struck out 13 and gave up three hits to lead the Medford Nationals 11-12-year-old Little League All-Star team to a win in the District 8 Tournament. Rick Imhausen broke up a 1-1 tie with a two-out, bases-loaded single to bring home the final two runs for Medford. The Nationals play today at 7:15 p.m. against Roseburg. Little League Softball SOUTH SUBURBAN 14, PHOENIX/TALENT 6 � Klamath Falls� South Suburban pitcher Kayla Hamson struck out 14 and allowed three hits in a win over Phoenix/Talent in the girls District 6, 11-12-year-old all-star tournament in Medford.
