Past Champions 2003 — South Medford 2002 — Klamath Union 2001 — North Medford 2000 — Grants Pass 1999 — Grants Pass 1998 — South Medford 1997 — Roseburg 1996 — Roseburg 1995 — South Medford 1994 — Grants Pass 1993 — North Medford 1992 — Klamath Union 1991 — Grants Pass 2004 Projected Order of Finish 1. CRATER: Last season’s near-miss — the Comets led South Medford by 19 points with three events to go, only to lose by one point — has only served to motivate Crater. Hurdle standout Jason James and middle distance star Greg Dallaire could have a hand in seven or eight victories. Comets have not won a district title in two decades. 2. SOUTH MEDFORD: The defending champs still possess ample horsepower with jumper Tyler King, hurdler Ryan Neuenschwander and sprinter Corey Conley leading the way. 3. NORTH MEDFORD: The Black Tornado will score a ton of points in the throwing events, rack up damage in the jumps and do just enough on the track — hurdler Ryan Weisz leads the way there — to finish in the top half. 4. GRANTS PASS: The Cavemen won only one event at the 2003 district meet but still finished third. The nickel and dime approach will work again. Workhorse Wes Lathen was a district placer in the shot put, discus and high jump last season and headlines this blue-collar team. Distance ace Trevor Hanlin, who was fourth in the 3,000 and fifth in the 1,500 last year, and sprinter Justin Ruyle, who was fourth in the 400 and seventh in the 200, are other Cavemen to watch. 5. KLAMATH UNION: Distance standout Kevin Pellegrino became the fourth KU runner to earn a scholarship to Stanford when he signed with the Cardinal in November. He’ll join former Pelicans Ian Dobson, Jacob Gomez and Lauren Jespersen on The Farm next fall, but has some other business to take care of first, like winning the 1,500 and 3,000 at the district meet. Senior Mark Schaaf, who was hindered by a stress fracture last season, could emerge as one of the SOC’s top sprinters. 6. ROSEBURG: The Indians still don’t have a lot of speed, but they return a handful of district placers, led by senior pole vaulter Austin Shoptaw, who has cleared 14 feet. Junior Isaiah Smith placed in all three jumps last season, Gavin Weaver placed in both distance events and junior Ben Sharp was fourth in the 300 hurdles. 7. EAGLE POINT: District record-holder Robbie Johnston, who has cleared 16 feet, fellow senior Brian Jermain (13-6) and junior Tom Provost give the Eagles the top pole vaulters in the SOC. Jacob Olson, the runner-up in the shot put last season, also returns. 8. ASHLAND: Juniors Andy Wright and David Morgan hope to challenge Pellegrino for long distance supremacy in the SOC. Both have their eyes on the 3,000 school record of 8:39. Grizzlies also have a good pole vaulter in junior Matt Gilmore, who has been over the bar at 13 feet.
