The cost is $5 for the first cubic yard of hazardous waste materials. The fee increases with the size of the load. Acceptable materials include window, drain and bathroom cleaners, products containing bleach or ammonia, old pesticides and insecticides, swimming-pool chemicals, weed killers, paint removers, old and toxic wood preservatives, batteries and thermostats that use mercury. Items not accepted include oil-based or latex paint, fluorescent light tubes, medical or biological waste, explosives, radioactive materials, ammunition, antifreeze, commercial or industrial waste, asbestos, 55-gallon drums, propane tanks, metal canisters and fire extinguishers. The agency cannot accept waste in containers larger than five gallons. On-site chemists will sort through everything that comes in, and the still-usable items will go on a “reuse” table, where the items will be free to take.
