Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 22, 2005 Since You Asked Machines sort mail in variety of ways The two mail drop-boxes on Eighth Street across from the post office are labeled one for stamped mail and one for metered mail. What about business reply mail, where the addressee pays the piper? Which box? And why does it matter? Aren't all pieces machine-sorted? — Maureen E., Medford Machines do sort most of the mail — 90 percent of letter mail in fact, said Jim Quirk, a Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Postal Service spokesman. Dropping your envelope in the right curbside box helps speed your mail on its way by getting it to the right sorting machine at processing and distribution plants. At the plants, stamped letters and cards are sent to a machine that locates and cancels the stamps. Metered mail doesn’t require cancellation and is sent directly to sorting equipment. Customers can deposit business-reply mail with stamped mail, Quirk said. The reply envelopes businesses provide have identification marks near the top right corner of the envelope, so the machine automatically separates them from the stamped mail and sends them on their way.
