They aren’t too bad at the plate, either, as they proved again in a Southern Oregon Conference softball sweep of Klamath Union Saturday. The Comets, getting all-around contributions from the two, won 10-0 in six innings and 9-1. Cristofaro pitched a three-hitter in the opener, striking out six, walking five and hitting a batter. Advertisement She also was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, while Bittle drove in three. In the nightcap, Bittle pitched a three-hitter, fanning 10 and walking three. She also had an RBI single. Cristofaro led the Game 2 hitters, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. "Both our pitchers are pitchers who can hit," said Crater coach Chris Arnold, "which is a pretty nice thing to have." The Comets (14-4, 7-3 SOC), had 25 hits in the two games. Tyler Sutherland was 3-for-3 in the opener and Kelle Thomas 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run single the Crater’s three-run first inning. In the second game, Sutherland and Angie Wright each had two hits and two RBIs. "We hit the ball better than we have the last couple of weeks," said Arnold. "The girls came out aggressively with their bats, and that takes a lot of pressure off the defense when you’re able to do that." ROSEBURG 3-0, GRANTS PASS 1-1 — At Roseburg, Grants Pass pushed a run across in the ninth inning of the second game and pitcher Jessica Morton finished off her shutout in the bottom half as the Cavers garnered the SOC split. Brin Tamblin scored the lone run when she reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jamie Torgenson’s single. Morton allowed six hits, fanned six and walked one. Counterpart Kim Posey gave up four hits, struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. Roseburg (7-9, 4-6 SOC) won the opener with a three-run third. Ashley Mendenhall drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single. Brooke Charles pitched the win, allowing four hits, striking out eight and walking five. In the loss, Morton gave up four hits, fanned five and walked two. Skyline Softball ILLINOIS VALLEY 11-6, NORTH VALLEY 1-1 — At Cave Junction, junior pitcher Kim Hamilton picked up victories in both ends of the doubleheader and recorded eight strikeouts and one walk in each game. In the opener, Tiphanie Pope highlighted an Illinois Valley (13-4, 9-3 Skyline) five-run second inning with a three-run double. Pope had two hits and three RBIs, while Hamilton collected three singles and drove in one run. North Valley scored its only run in the first inning when Michelle Beck singled, advanced to third on two passed balls and scored on a fielder’s choice. In the second game, Ashley D’Arpino provided a two-run single in the fifth inning and scored two runs. Kelsi Snook added two hits and one RBI for the Cougars. MAZAMA 10-6, LAKEVIEW 2-9 — At Klamath Falls, Lakeview won its first Skyline Conference game after 12 losses behind Lacey Pardue’s four RBIs. For Mazama (6-11, 5-9 Skyline) in the second game, Kim Glidewell, Ashley Dinwiddie, Krystal Lawrence and Camie Fure all had two hits. In the first game, Mazama got two hits and two RBIs from winning pitcher Danielle Stratton and Glidewell. Fure also had two hits. Alex Tomlinson’s triple was St. Mary’s only hit in Game 1. Kathryn Zielony had both hits for the Crusaders in the second game. SOC Baseball KLAMATH UNION 8-7, CRATER 1-4 — At Klamath Falls, Jon James pitched a complete game five-hitter and added two base hits in the first game. Klamath Union (13-6, 7-3 SOC) erased a 1-0 deficit in the opener with a two-out, two-run rally in the fourth. Cory Spires got things started with a single, then Daniel Bennett walked and Aaron Croxford singled to load the bases. Brandt Renstrom then delivered a two-run single that proved to be the winning hit. Spires added a two-run double in the sixth. Adam Reed collected two hits for the Comets. In Game 2, four hits and four errors led to seven runs in the second inning for the Pelicans. Spires provided a two-run triple during the outburst. Andrew Norum’s two-run double staked Crater to a first-inning lead. The game got called because of rain after the Comets’ at-bat in the sixth inning. Crater pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth. For Crater, Colin Schoonover, Kevin Mulder and Dan Whitehead each had two hits. Tyler Conner and Eric Brosterhous each had three hits and combined for three RBIs for the Vikings. Jeff Nelson added two hits and three RBIs.
