But the Vikings took a huge step in not only reversing that trend but putting themselves in position for a state playoff berth by knocking off Skyline Conference co-leader Phoenix, 10-4, Tuesday. Freshman Chelsea Whiteley sparked the Vikings attack with three hits and three RBIs. Mazama also got two triples from Danielle Stratton and two doubles from Camie Furi to fuel a 12-hit effort. "We’ve been having trouble scoring runs," Mazama coach Todd Nickerson said. "If we hit like we did today, we’ll win a lot of games." The Vikings used an RBI triple by Stratton and Whiteley’s RBI double to take a 2-0 first-inning lead against Phoenix starter Nicole Engle. The Pirates (6-5, 5-2 Skyline) came back with two unearned runs in the second and went ahead 4-2 in the top of the third on an RBI single by Akane Arai and a sacrifice fly by Shonda George. But Mazama took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on RBIs by Ann Bocchi, Whiteley and Quenby Cox. Advertisement "With runners in scoring position, we seemed to come up with the key hit today," said Nickerson. Viking pitcher Vanessa Pisan blanked the Pirates through the last four innings. "(Pisan) made them hit ground balls and kept them off balance," said Nickerson. For Phoenix, George and Arai had two hits each. Cassie Giesbrecht and Jessica Miller each doubled, while Jesse Vegos and Jordon Reyes added two hits apiece for the Chieftains. For Hidden Valley (1-6 Skyline), Angie Dangelo had four strikeouts and two walks. Illinois Valley pitcher Serena Barry allowed five hits in the complete-game effort. For Henley (5-2 Skyline), Nikki Hargrave had eight strikeouts, while Kristin Brunelle had two hits. SOC KLAMATH UNION 9-3, ASHLAND 1-2 — At Ashland, Klamath Union’s Brenna Aspera singled in Nikki Ayres with two outs in the seventh inning of Game 2 to cap a two-run rally and give the Pelicans (2-4 SOC) the sweep. Trevelynn Sears started the comeback with a single and came around to score on an Ayres single and an error. Ayres was 3-for-4, and Sears and Kate Gibbs were each 2-for-3. Gibbs had an RBI. In the opener, Ayres pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12 and walking four. She also had two hits. Ashland fell to 7-10 overall and 0-6 in the SOC. Endicott allowed two hits as the Indians (11-3, 6-0 SOC) won the second game in eight innings. She struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone in out- dueling Ashley Franko. Roseburg scored the winning run after Kristen Harris opened the eighth with a single and was sacrificed to second. Consecutive intentional walks to Kim Posey and Ali Paz moved Harris to third, and she scored on Ashley Roy’s single. It was Roy’s second hit of the game. In the first game, Curry’s five-hitter featured eight strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter. Bryttny Kreshka was 3-for-3 in the win.
