The 27-year-old, a 2006 graduate of Roseburg High School, is expected to get an opportunity to make a National Football League roster this summer. Loomis participated in the NFL Scouting Combine, which was held Feb. 17-23 in Indianapolis. The NFL Draft is set for April 30-May 2. Loomis, a 6-foot-2, 221-pounder, is the No. 1-ranked punter by NFLdraftscout.com and projected as a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick. “It was a great honor to get invited (to the combine),” Loomis said in a phone interview from Portland. “I felt like I did pretty well, I didn’t come out of it feeling like I hurt myself. I enjoyed it. Hopefully, it ends up working out in the long run.” Loomis said he only punted one day at the combine and was interviewed by several coaches and front office executives at a time. “I think I took 15 punts,” he said. “It was a strange set-up. It was hard to get into a rhythm, but once I got used to it I felt comfortable hitting a pretty consistent ball. I thought I did fine.” After an all-state senior season of kicking and punting at Roseburg High in 2005, Loomis won the punting job at Oregon State University the following fall as a true freshman, averaging 41.3 yards a punt. He was a third-team freshman All-American, but left the program shortly before the 2007 season for personal reasons. Loomis served in the Army from 2007-11. He later got a chance to try out with the PSU football team and ended up being their punter for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Vikings are a member of the Big Sky Conference, an NCAA D-1 Football Championship Subdivision school. Loomis was a first-team All-American selection both years, leading the nation with averages of 46.5 yards as a junior and 46.0 as a senior. He was voted by his teammates as the Vikings’ co-most valuable player along with center Cornelius Edison last fall. Loomis participated in the Senior Bowl, a college All-Star game. “I enjoyed my years at Portland State,” he said. “I didn’t know what I was getting into, but it was an amazing experience. I appreciate coach (Nigel) Burton (the former PSU head coach) giving me a chance. I’d like to have a couple of punts back and would’ve liked to win a few more games, but I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” Loomis anxiously awaits the draft to see if he’ll get selected. If he’s not drafted, he could still make a roster as a free agent. He’s been working out in Portland and plans to punt at PSU’s Pro Day on April 1. “To have an opportunity is all you can ask as a punter,” Loomis said.
