STUDENT PHONES ACROSS CONTINENT Robert M. Wilson, a student of the engineering department of the University of California at Berkeley, in a recent letter to his parents at Medford, states the following: "I had quite an interesting experience yesterday. The telephone company, in order to advertise, connected the mining building (U. of C.) with Columbia university in New York by phone. The professors of both universities talked to each other for over an hour. At the start a fellow at the other end asked at each principal city on the way, such as Chicago, Salt Lake City, Denver, Reno and a few others, questions, viz: the time, weather, temperature and population at each city. The temperature ranged from 27 degrees to 70 degrees. The time got earlier as they came west, and all sorts of weather was encountered. Each student had a receiver, but not a mouthpiece. Their voices were as plain as on a short-distance phone." SOCIETY The third annual dance of the Rogue River Valley university club will be given this evening at the Holland hotel. A band will furnish music for the dancing. At midnight supper will be served at the club room which has been prettily decorated throughout with fruit blossoms. The patronesses are as follows: Mrs. S. Vilas Beckwith, Mrs. Ralph G. Bardwell, Mrs. Walter Bowne, Jr., Mrs. Chase H. Conner, Mrs. Donald Clark, Mrs. E. F. Guthrie, Mrs. Philip Hamill, Mrs. Fred Hopkins, Mrs. Frederick Lewis, Mrs. Porter J. Neff, Mrs. Frank Owen, Mrs. Frank Preston, Mrs. Frederick C. Page, Mrs. Geo Roberts and Mrs. R. C. Washburn. The East Side circle will entertain all the ladies of the Baptist church and their friends with a social held at the home of Mrs. Kent, 818 West Main street, Wednesday afternoon, March 22. This will be the first quarterly meeting of the ladies' aid.
