Anthony G. Bearden, 31, of the 4800 block of Upton Road, disappeared in the middle of the river about 5:15 p.m. near the Gold Nugget recreation area, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Bearden, who was not wearing a life jacket, was swimming with his fiancee’s daughter, who turned 13 on Monday, when the pair attempted to swim across the river, sheriff’s Capt. Joe Puckett said. About half-way across, Bearden disappeared, Puckett said. The pair were in a narrow stretch of water upstream of two treacherous areas — Hayes Falls and Nugget Falls, Puckett said. The girl searched the depths for Bearden, but she couldn’t locate him and she eventually returned to shore, Puckett said. However, difficult currents and darkness prevented rescuers from recovering his body Monday night, Puckett said. Crews at dawn expect to recover the body, he said. Sheriff’s marine deputies were joined by several fire and rescue organizations in the search effort.
