Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend July 27, 2005 Phoenix teen set to begin rehabilitation after cancer surgery in Portland By TIM TROWER Mail Tribune Adam Bradfield, a 15-year-old Phoenix boy who underwent cancer surgery Friday at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, was expected to begin rehabilitation Tuesday. Bradfield, a former Little League teammate of the Phoenix-Talent players in the Babe Ruth Northwest Regional at Nampa, Idaho, this week, was the subject of a feature story in Saturday’s Mail Tribune. "He’s doing really good now," said his mother, Robin, from the hospital Tuesday. "They were surprised at how well he’s doing." Adam was stricken with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, in his upper left leg. Doctors removed his femur and replaced it with a cadaver femur, then inserted a metal rod for stability. They also performed a total hip replacement, giving him a mechanical joint. Advertisement "They’re pretty confident they got all the cancer," said Robin. The operation was expected to last seven to eight hours but took 9½ hours, said Robin, because doctors had to cut lower on the femur than they initially thought. "I’m just so glad that day is over with," said Robin, adding that Adam lost a lot of blood during the operation. When he woke up, his mother was there. "He said, ‘Mom, go to the hotel,’" said Robin. "‘I’m a tough boy.’ But I just couldn’t leave him." Adam is expected to remain in the Portland area for a couple weeks as he begins physical therapy. Once home, he’ll continue rehabilitation and make regular trips to see his surgeon in Portland. "There’s going to be a lot of physical therapy before he’s able to walk again," said Robin. Adam also will continue chemotherapy treatments through the end of the year, she said. This is the second time Adam has battled cancer. He was diagnosed with leukemia on Thanksgiving Day of 2000, just months after his Little League team won the 10-11-year-old state championship. He had been declared cancer-free for about a year before osteosarcoma was detected this past spring.
