Newton lets fly one of state's all-time best discus throws ROSEBURG - Roseburg's Joe Newton uncorked the fifth-best prep discus throw in state history Thursday. Despite Newton's big mark, Grants Pass edged Roseburg 76-69 in a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet. On the girls side, the Indians raced past the Cavers, 119-26. Crater loaded the bases on an error by second baseman Tera Re and a single by Justine Bettencourt. After two force outs at home plate, an error by shortstop Kristina Bateman scored Bettencourt. Crystal Huntley was 3-for-4 and Bettencourt 2-for-5 for Crater. Bateman and Randi Mapes each had two hits for the Eagles (9-8 overall), who committed seven errors. Brookins' second double of the game came with Cascade Christian down 5-2. Two walks and a single by Danae McGragh loaded the bases with no outs for Brookins, who cleared them, then scored on Natalie Dicus' double. Rusty Mosser's single scored Dicus with the winning run.
