Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 3, 2006 Talent civic center plans move forward Complex will include a larger library and park and a new city hall By JAMIE MILLER Mail Tribune The city of Talent is forging ahead with plans to construct a new library, City Hall and commons area. The Civic Center Campus will be adjacent to the city’s existing community center and library. The lot was home to the city’s old fire station, which was demolished to make way for the construction. The campus will be surrounded by a large park with a lawn area, restrooms, playground equipment and parking spaces. Construction of the new library will begin in April and a ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 12. The new building will be three times the size of the old library, which is 31 years old, and will feature a youth area and a meeting room that will seat 85. The library will house a collection of 16,160 items and seating for 58 patrons with 13 computer workstations. Advertisement Jackson County voters approved a $38.9 million bond in 2000 to pay for new and expanded libraries throughout the county. Central Point also combined its new library with an expanded City Hall. Talent’s Urban Renewal Agency has set aside about $2 million for the first building phase of the new City Hall. The first phase will cover the 7,596 square-foot office section of the building. Marla Cates, executive director of the Urban Renewal Agency, said new staff office space is a critical reason for building a new City Hall. As soon as the offices are done, city staff will move in. City leaders also have said in the past that a new community meeting space is desperately needed to ease the heavy, damaging use of the town’s historic community center. A community room and council chamber will be built in the second and third phases of the civic campus. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The Urban Renewal Agency also is overseeing the construction of the commons area, the park section of the Civic Center Campus. The commons area will be twice the size of the existing library park.
