Oregon State Police reported 47-year-old Donovan Hilby died after his vehicle flew off Highway 99 about one mile north of the town and struck a large tree. Investigators said the crash happened about 9 p.m. A preliminary investigation shows Hilby's vehicle, a 1997 Honda coupe, was traveling northbound on the highway at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a right curve and traveled off the road. The vehicle struck a tree on the driver's side door. Hilby was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Hilby's passenger, 35-year-old Patrick Green of Grants Pass, was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. OSP said in a news release they believe alcohol and speed are contributing facotrs in the crash. Emergency personnel restricted the highway stretch to one lane for about three hours while police and firefighters worked the scene. OSP was joined by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Rogue River Fire Department, Rogue River police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. It was the second vehicle crash near Rogue River to kill a motorist in less than 24 hours in which police suspect alcohol was involved. At about 11 p.m. Sunday, 39-year-old John Soule of Gold Hill drove his motorcycle off Interstate 5 while rounding a curve near milepost 44, about four miles outside of town, as he drove south.
