Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 5, 2005 Police search for assault suspects By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune A White City assault left a Medford man critically injured while frustrating police investigators trying to identify his attackers. Richard Anthony Deasentis, 29, of Medford, was listed in critical condition Wednesday at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, said detective Dan Hobbs of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Deasentis suffered severe head injuries and lost his left eye after being beaten during an Aug. 18 fight in the 7200 block of Cramer Drive, Hobbs said. Two weeks after the attack, investigators are still looking for suspects, Hobbs added. Another man, 40-year-old Victor John Puryear of Jacksonville, also was injured. Puryear spent a day at Rogue Valley Medical Center, where he was treated for facial cuts, broken ribs and a collapsed lung before being released, Hobbs said. The investigation initially stalled after Deasentis and Puryear lied, telling sheriff’s deputies they had been robbed at a convenience store on White City’s Antelope Road, Hobbs said. Detectives weren’t put on the case until several days after the initial report, Hobbs said. A deputy responded to a reported fight on Cramer Drive at about 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, and found evidence of an assault, Hobbs said. After calling hospitals, the deputy discovered that Puryear and Deasentis had sought medical treatment on their own at RVMC, the detective said. Advertisement While two to three people are suspected in the assault, as many as 15 may have information, Hobbs said. Police on Aug. 26 arrested 18-year-old Jonathan Thomas Dalbec, of the 2600 block of Hadley Circle in White City, in connection with the case. However, charges of first- and second-degree assault against Dalbec were dismissed Friday, and he was released from jail. Dalbec was believed to be involved in the incident, but investigators determined he was not a primary suspect in the assault, said Tim Barnack, deputy district attorney for Jackson County.
