Pirates split in softball twin bill KLAMATH FALLS -- Phoenix took another step toward a playoff spot in Skyline Conference softball Friday, splitting a doubleheader against league-leading Henley. The Pirates posted three clutch runs in the seventh inning to take the opener, 3-1. Henley countered with a 9-4 win in the nightcap. The split helped Phoenix break a tie for second place with Rogue River and put the Pirates at 13-7 in league. The Chieftains stand third at 12-6, with Lakeview (11-7) and Illinois Valley (10-8) each holding out hope for one of the three state playoff spots. Henley, which was missing three suspended starters, moved to 17-3 in Skyline play and has already wrapped up the No. 1 seed. The Hornets (21-4) took a 1-0 lead in the opener off a Phoenix error, but returned the gift in the pivotal seventh inning. With two outs in the seventh, Megan Capp reached first on an error and Courtney Lucas added a single for the Pirates. Jennifer Dunlap then hit a shot to the third baseman, whose error allowed Capp to score and Dunlap to reach safely.
