WHAT: Foy has found success in soccer, where she plays center midfielder, and in the world of art, where she painted a mural for her senior project. TO SEE THE ART: Soccer Post, 1550 Biddle Road, Medford. » Social News Just like blue and yellow making green, soccer and art make Toreah Foy who she is. The North Medford senior loves each, and the two are quite interconnected in her life. For her senior project, she painted a colorful mural on the storefront of Medford Soccer Post in celebration of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which begins June 6 in Canada. Creating the art was an easy decision for the 18-year-old center midfielder, who is one of thousands set to compete in the third annual Rogue Memorial Challenge this weekend in Medford. The tournament, which changed hands three years ago, is one of the biggest in the region and has been credited with generating millions for the local economy. Foy is a member of two-time defending champion Rogue Valley Timbers 96G Red, a U19 club that returns a powerful lineup. The squad begins its defense against Grants Pass Youth Soccer Club Storm at 10:40 a.m. Saturday at U.S. Cellular Community Park. “We’ve come together nicely,” Foy says. “Everyone has been really flexible with where they play and how many minutes they play.” Foy works as a holding center midfielder alongside Bailey O’Connor. Those two, along with rotating attacking midfielders, position themselves in a triangle formation that has proved as treacherous as the Bermuda Triangle to opponents. Foy also helped propel the Black Tornado to the Class 6A state finals in the fall. Tualatin won, 2-0. “Tori just has a motor that never stops,” says Kevin Primerano, 96G Red coach and tournament director. “Her energy in the midfield has been incredible. She and Bailey O’Connor in the middle just make it very, very difficult for the opposing team’s midfielders to operate. She’s always been very good on ball (and is) deceptive in ballhandling, and she’s been that way since the first time I saw her.” Away from the pitch, Foy has quite an interesting — and busy — life. She’s a valedictorian who can speak French and who took a three-week exchange trip to Italy in March. “It’s definitely difficult sometimes,” says Foy, who is one of six siblings. “This year has been the most stressful.” She began her mural before leaving for Europe and nearly completed it last week, with just a few little touch-ups to go. The design is that of a woman’s face with streams and lines of color emerging around her. It’s a popular image that Foy put her own spin on. The project has taken about 40 hours to complete between sketching and freehand painting. As she worked on it last week, three different people approached her to ask if she’d do art for their businesses. Soccer Post owner Cheryl Rose is delighted with the mural. “Tori brought this idea to me and I jumped all over it,” says Rose, whose business is located at 1550 Biddle Road in Medford. “She’s just such a nice role model for kids. She proves you can do more than just play soccer. “She is an amazing artist and a committed kid. She’s just lovely.” Soccer and art have many connections to Foy. “I have been drawing my whole life and I started playing soccer in the third grade,” she says. “They are both big stress relievers. You don’t have to think of anything.” Foy plans to move to French-speaking Lausanne, Switzerland, after high school and attend an art institute. Her sister, 25-year-old Shirah, is fluent in French and found success there. “Europe is the world center for art,” says Foy, who most enjoys creating with graphite pencils and paint brushes. Foy hopes her mural inspires others, especially young women. “It wasn’t just art.” Foy says. “It was a way to give back to the community.” Rose says Foy has done exactly that. “We forget that (the Women’s World Cup) features some of greatest players in the world,” Rose says. “Tori is just trying to bring that to light a little bit. It’s great to see, especially for little girls.” Reach reporter Dan Jones at 541-776-4499, or email [email protected].
