Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Sep. 12, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Sept. 12, 1915 DEAN OF MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY DEAD ASHLAND — Dr. Karl E. Guthe, dean of the University of Michigan, died at a local hospital here early today following an operation, a weakness of the heart being the direct cause of death. Dr. Guthe, who was 49 years of age, was noted as a scientist and was prominent in the educational field. He was in government employ for two years, a member of the faculty of Iowa for four years, and dean of the University of Michigan for the last six years. VERMONT GOVERNOR VISITS MEDFORD, INSPECTS HIGHWAY Governor Charles W. Gates of Vermont and party, en route to the San Francisco exposition, were welcomed to Medford Saturday morning by the Medford Commercial club, and former Vermonters, given flowers and fancy peaches and taken over the Pacific highway to Ashland, where they rejoined their train. Accompanying the party were a delegation of the foremost highway engineers and builders in the United States, en route to the Pan American road congress, escorted by Sam Hill, all of whom were greatly interested in the paved road, which they pronounced has few equals in the country. In the party were William D. Uhler, chief engineer of the Pennsylvania state highway commission; James H. MacDonald, for eighteen years highway commissioner of Connecticut; C.S. Luck, Herbert Spencer, C.S. Gosman, Ben Gates, W.T. Winn, A.A. Hall, C.D. Knight, W.T. Dust, Mr. Headly, Samuel Hill and H.L. Bolby. There were also about half a dozen women in the party. Cars for the occasion were furnished by C.A. Knight, L.A. Wakeman, John A. Westerlund, A.W. Stone, George Treichler and G. Putnam.
