Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman SOU women right on the Marks in rout of Evergreen By DON HUNT Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Sara Marks has a simple motto when it comes to playing basketball at Southern Oregon University: Let’s run, gun and have some fun. Marks and her Raider teammates were at their running, gunning best Saturday evening at McNeal Pavilion as they laid a 90-45 whipping on Evergreen State. Marks, a 5-foot-5 senior point guard who appears to be stuck on full-throttle whenever she steps on the court, exploded for 17 first-half points and finished with a game-high 21 in sparking the red-hot Raiders to their eighth straight victory and their 10th consecutive Cascade Conference win without a loss. Overall, the Raiders are 13-7. Evergreen fell to 0-11 in league play and 3-19 overall. "This is a fun team to play on," said Marks, who added six assists and six steals to complement her scoring output. "We just keep pushing the ball up the court until the other team wears out. "And right now, we’re running teams to death." The visiting Geoducks were dead meat before the first half ended Saturday. With the cat-quick Marks leading the charge, SOU led 9-2 three minutes into the game, 27-12 midway through the first half and 47-25 at the break. The only points of interest to be determined after the intermission were: (1) Would shooting guard Kelley Dexter ever miss a shot? (2) Would all 12 Raider players who suited up reach the scoring column? (3) Would the Raiders reach 100-plus points for the third time this season? SOU failed to hit the coveted century mark, but almost certainly would have had Dexter been allowed to play more than 24 minutes. The 5-10 senior from Corvallis went 7-for-7 from the field, buried all four of her 3-point attempts and finished with 18 points, not to mention seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. "I haven’t been shooting the ball that well this season but tonight my shot felt good," said Dexter, who entered Saturday’s contest shooting just a shade under 40 percent from the field. "Tonight, I didn’t think about it. I just shot the ball, and it went in." Dexter would have played more had her and the other Raider starters not played so brilliantly. But with the differential reaching 40 points on a Marks layup with 9:10 remaining in the game, SOU coach Kevin Wilson ushered in every player off his bench, and might have sent in assistant coaches Cheryl Kent and Nicole Whitney Chamberlin if he could have gotten away with it. Kent and Chamberlin are both pregnant. "We sub kids in and we just keep going," Wilson said. "We’re not going to tell our bench players to quit running or shooting." Eleven of the 12 Raiders in uniform had scored at least two points when Evergreen coach Monica Heuer drew a technical foul with 2:20 remaining and the Raiders leading 89-43. Wilson initially sent sophomore reserve shooting guard Kim Harline to the free-throw line but then realized that freshman point guard Lisa Howard was the lone Raider without a point. Howard swished both free throws to make the Raiders’ night complete. "We had 11 kids score last night (in a 90-55 victory over Northwest College) and got all 12 on the board tonight," Wilson said. "I can’t remember the last time that’s happened, but it sure feels good." Senior post Kara Magee-Arick was the third Raider in double figures with 17 points, while senior post Amy Tangedahl came off the bench to collect 15 rebounds. SOU shot 51.7 percent from the field (31-of-60), 80.8 percent from the free-throw line (21-of-26) and outrebounded the Geoducks 43-39. But the stat that Wilson liked best was the Raiders’ 23 assists among their 31 field goals. "Our girls really don’t care who scores the points and that’s evident in the way they share the ball," he said. "They’re always looking to hit the open player." That’s part of the fun that goes with the run and gun.
