Victims identified in Selma vehicle fire By Nick Morgan Updated: Mar 30, 2021 06:49 PM A A Misc. Emergency Police have identified the bodies found last week in the wreckage of a vehicle fire near Selma as those of two Josephine County men. Inside the vehicle fire reported March 24 on a forest road were the remains of Daniel Thomas Hill, 24, and Paul Martin Folk, 26, according to a release issued Tuesday by Oregon State Police. The investigation into Hill’s and Folk’s deaths is being treated as a homicide, according to OSP and an earlier news report last week from the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was first reported at 12:50 p.m. March 24 about 6 miles up McMullen Creek Road outside Selma. Because of the vehicle’s remote location, fire crews were unable to extinguish the vehicle but law enforcement and first-responders found Hill and Folk’s bodies inside the wreckage. According to OSP, Grants Pass police took a missing persons report on Folk prior to the fire. Court records show multiple felony convictions since 2014 for Folk in Jackson, Josephine and Douglas County circuit courts, including methamphetamine possession, felon in possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a vehicle and attempting to elude police in a vehicle. Lane County Circuit Court records show that Hill’s felony convictions were for second-degree assault and third-degree robbery in 2015, but he also had pending felony counts of attempting to elude police in a vehicle and possession of methamphetamine and heroin surrounding a November chase. Hill’s most recent arrest was March 15, when Grants Pass police arrested him on a misdemeanor charge of felon in possession of a firearm, according to Josephine County Circuit Court records. The OSP release has no new information about the possibly related police shooting that occurred at an investigation staging area about two miles from the scene of the fire investigation. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the shooting investigation involving a Josephine County sheriff’s deputy who fired at a vehicle shortly after midnight for circumstances still under investigation. Whether anyone was injured in the shooting has not been released, nor has there been a description of a second vehicle that reportedly fled the scene of the shooting.
