Trucker sought after fruit crates cause 5-car crash It will be up to the District Attorney�s Office whether a Washington truck driver will be cited after he drove away from a five-vehicle accident Thursday he allegedly caused. According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Michael Buckman, Todd Carroll was driving north on Interstate 5 around 7:45 p.m. when four white, plastic fruit crates flew from the back of his flatbed truck onto the road. A vehicle following directly behind the truck struck the crates head-on, Buckman said, despite attempts to avoid the objects. Another car swerved to avoid the boxes and struck the cement median. A third vehicle braked hard, but collided with one of the boxes before smashing into a pickup truck that had also swerved to avoid the flying crates. A fifth car was damaged when it was struck by the pickup. According to Buckman, Carroll stopped about three miles up the road, checked his load and headed home. "He did just kind of drive away," he said. Prior to the accident, Carroll had dropped a load of apples off at Sabroso in Medford. He was taking the empty crates back to Washington. After talking to officials with Sabroso, Buckman was able to contact Carroll by phone Friday. Buckman has not issued any citations yet, but once the investigation is concluded he will forward the information to the District Attorney�s Office, he said. "Then it�s up to them," Buckman added. All parties in the accident were wearing seat belts and no one was injured, Buckman said.
