Fog seeding at airport today Jan 18, 2014 12:00 AM A A Due to freezing fog and low visibility, the Jackson County Airport Authority will be conducting fog-seeding operations today in an effort to permit planes to take off and land at the Rogue Valley airport. The operation uses a helium-filled balloon that rises 500 feet in the air and disperses crushed dry ice. If the conditions are right, the moisture in the fog attaches to the dry ice particles as they fall to the ground, which may improve visibility enough at the approach end of the runway (near Vilas Road) for aircraft to take off and land, airport officials said in a news release. The operation produces very little drift to areas outside of the airport boundaries compared to the delivery of the dry ice by aircraft, airport officials said, but drivers and pedestrians should still exercise caution in the immediate vicinity of the airport.
