OF NOTE : South Medford’s Conor Carroll scores 17 points and Hunter Bradford adds 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to lead the Rogues, while fellow Panther Josh Washington pulls in 20 rebounds to go with 10 points and three blocks for the Siskiyous. » Social News North Medford senior Brian Schireman had no doubts that he would have fun during the ninth annual Mail Tribune All-Star Basketball Classic on Friday night at Kids Unlimited. The standout 6-foot-2 guard who led the Southwest Conference in scoring this past season had plenty of fun last year in the annual all-star game that features the Rogue Valley’s premier high school players from the 6A to 1A levels. This year, however, it was a little more important for Schireman to walk out with a victory. With the outcome up for grabs as his Siskiyous team trailed 54-52 entering the fourth quarter, Schireman scored seven of his game-high 27 points in the final frame to help spur his squad to a 75-66 victory over the Rogues — extending the Siskiyous’ improbable winning streak in the series to seven straight years. “I lost last year and I didn’t want to lose two in a row,” said Schireman, who was part of the Rogues in a 94-91 loss. “I’m coming off a loss, too, honestly (in the 6A state playoffs at North Medford). This isn’t the real season but that last one hurt so trying to get a win in my last game around here was nice.” Schireman added six rebounds and five assists to his stellar outing to capture Most Valuable Player honors in a back-and-forth affair where the final score was the largest lead either team enjoyed. “I was just having fun with my team,” said Schireman of his MVP effort. “All these guys I know from previous years of playing on the AAU circuits and stuff so it was a lot of fun. I don’t think any of us came out here trying to get ours, we all kind of played off each other and I guess the shots I was taking were just going in.” Schireman received a serious challenge for top honors from South Medford’s senior trio of Josh Washington, Conor Carroll and Hunter Bradford, who were coming off a second-place showing at the 6A state tournament. Washington pulled down a whopping 20 rebounds to go with 10 points and three blocks as Schireman’s teammate on the Siskiyous, while Carroll and Bradford paced the Rogues. Carroll finished with a team-high 17 points to go with four rebounds, while Bradford tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists one year after earning MVP honors in the benefit game. More than $50,000 has been raised for Kids Unlimited in the history of the Mail Tribune All-Star Basketball Classic. “Brian just kind of got hot and it’s hard to stop him when he gets going like that,” Bradford said of passing the MVP torch. “That was a good job by him, but it was fun no matter what.” With the score tied at 62-all and four minutes to play, Bradford and Washington took turns scoring over the other in the paint before North Valley senior Michael Martz scored on a cut to the basket to put the Siskiyous ahead. After a series of missed opportunities by both teams, St. Mary’s senior Tyler West showed his late-game magic yet again with a 3-pointer following another rebound by Washington and an assist by the 6-foot-7 Panther post. Carroll answered on the other end but West again tallied on a baseline fadeaway with one minute to play to put the Siskiyous up 71-66. “I didn’t play my game in the first half but I just decided this is an all-star game, I can shoot and there aren’t any real regrets that goes along with it,” said West, who helped lead St. Mary’s to a Class 3A title two weeks ago. “I just decided to shoot and go for it and I was able to hit my shots in the end so that was cool.” Washington then came up big on the defensive end with a stop of Bradford and a block of Carroll to keep the Rogues at bay. After two free throws by Ashland junior Malik Pippa, Washington was able to punctuate his team’s comeback with a rim-shaking dunk off a long assist by Schireman. “It was fun, especially being my last year here, playing with some of the younger guys,” said Washington, who earlier leapt out of his seat in excitement over a one-handed jam down the lane by Crater sophomore Kiefer Edwards. “There was a lot of excitement getting to play against Hunter and Conor again for the last time, too, it was just all fun out there.” West finished with seven points and five rebounds while Edwards had seven points and seven rebounds and Martz had five points for the Siskiyous. Grants Pass senior Brandon Hoy, who was the leading vote-getter to start with 1,385 votes, added seven points, four rebounds and three assists, and the Siskiyous also got steady efforts from Phoenix junior Thomas Skaff (five points), Rogue River senior Chris Campbell (four points, five rebounds, two assists) and Pippa (three points, two rebounds). Cascade Christian junior Carson Cochran was the top vote-getter for the Rogues with 655 and totaled nine points and two rebounds, while Phoenix senior Mase Masalosalo contributed seven points and seven rebounds and Ashland senior Walker Shibley had six points and two assists. Also leading the charge for the Rogues were North Medford sophomore Kaison Faust (four points, four rebounds), Butte Falls senior Wil Bateman (three points), Hidden Valley senior Doug Elkins (three bounds, two rebounds), Illinois Valley freshman Caleb Hess (two points) and Eagle Point senior Mario Quintero (three rebounds, three assists).
