If so, email us a 300- to 500-word story about it that includes directions, and send pictures if you have them, to Mail Tribune features editor David Smigelski at [email protected] .   » Social News While on a recent trip to Idaho, we first took a short detour to check out the Wooden Shoe Farm Tulip Festival in the town of Woodburn, which is about a 3-1/2 hour drive north from here. Tulips by the thousands waited to be photographed, so I did what everybody else with a camera was doing and started shooting pictures of tulips. Reds, purples, pinks, yellows and every color under the sun were there to mesmerize visitors and take our breath away. Row upon row of tulips stood upright — 40 acres' worth — almost like they anticipated being photographed and hung on the walls of bragging tourists. Workers in the large fields busied themselves cutting freshly budded tulips to be shipped and sold for arrangements and bouquets. Tractors stood silently at the ends of colorful rows for children to try out their climbing skills and for parents to use as props when they photographed their little ones for posterity. Various modes of transport to and from the fields were available, including a cow train, a tour train and tram/hay wagon. We were thankful to have taken our rubber boots, as mud puddles were frequent — but not frowned upon. Wooden windmills, both life-size and childlike, stood stoically on the grounds, giving a sense of being transported to another place. Holland, perhaps? We took off our boots when we got back to the car and stuffed them into plastic bags. Two weeks later, the dried mud is still pasted to the soles and sides. I haven't cleaned them off yet. Maybe I just want to savor the fresh smell of those fields a bit longer, along with the colors of those flowers and the wonder of the moments spent there. If you decide to go, the festival runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through May 3.  Admission costs $5 per person ($20 maximum per car; children younger than 12 free).
